BIRD GLOSSARY
brood (n) - a collective term referring to the young hatched from a single clutch of eggs.
brood (v) - to sit on and keep warm (chicks)
cavity - a hole or opening in a tree trunk or limb
clutch - total number of eggs laid by a female bird in one nest attempt
fledge - the act of leaving the nest or nest cavity after reaching a certain stage of maturity
hacking - the controlled release of young falcons from an artificial eyrie
incubation - the act of rearing and hatching eggs by the warmth of the body
moult - the process in which birds replace their feathers by shedding old ones and growing new ones
nestling - a young bird that has not left, or abandoned, the nest
nocturnal - of, relating to, occurring, or active in the night
preening - to smooth or clean (feathers) with the beak or bill.
roost (v) - to settle down for rest of sleep: perch
roost (n) - a support on which birds rest; a place where birds customarily rest; also a group of birds resting together
